How to Reflect After Using AI to Strengthen Your Own Thinking

After synthesis tasks - compiling sources, summarizing research, connecting ideas across domains - the useful question is about borders. Review it quarterly. Not to judge, but to notice directional patterns. Are there domains where you've genuinely internalized AI-taught frameworks and now deploy them on your own? Are there domains where the opposite has happened - where AI use has made you less willing to attempt things independently? Both patterns are real. Both are worth tracking without immediately trying to fix.

The intervention is one question: where did AI help me think this week, and which parts of that thinking do I now own? Five minutes. Every week. The compounding effect over a year is not trivial.
Mindfulness practices, somewhat unexpectedly, prime better post-AI reflection - not because mindfulness directly sharpens analytical thinking, where the evidence is genuinely mixed, but because it trains the meta-awareness habit. Noticing what your mind is doing right now and noticing where your mind disengaged during an AI interaction are structurally similar capacities. One reinforces the other in ways that feel subtle until suddenly they don't.
The deeper question - and I don't have a clean answer to this - is what we're ultimately trying to preserve through all of it. Specific skills? The broader capacity for independent thought? Some relationship to difficulty that we've decided matters intrinsically? Maybe that goal shifts as AI capabilities shift. Maybe what we're really tracking is something more like intellectual integrity - a commitment to knowing what we actually know rather than what we've merely received.
